Locally led Levelling Up

Locally led Levelling Up

With levelling up the core pillar of this Government’s domestic agenda, I welcome the Prime Minister’s passion and motivation to drive growth in our regions. As a Local Enterprise Partnership, we have a unique structure that brings together local authorities, businesses, and the academic sector to drive forward sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Our role as a commissioner, enabler, and agitator is underpinned by policy-making in key priority sectors which we see as a catalyst for job creation. We have policy leads who work with our specialist businesses advisors to ensure our strategy is transformed into action. We are therefore well equipped to deliver on the Prime Minister’s call for greater leadership locally.

For the last 10 years, we have been making locally informed, evidence-based, and targetted investments that create better places for all of us to work in and live in. Critical to this is how LEPs have harnessed the energy and expertise of business leaders which is reflected in our board members as well as our wide network of industry-led steering groups.

COVID-19 has highlighted the existing inequalities in our society and GBSLEP is doing everything to help businesses, especially SMEs to seize upon the opportunity to build back greener, with opportunities for everyone from jobs and skills to placemaking and technology. GBSLEP has allocated £1.5bn of grant funding to hundreds of projects to date. As more projects are delivered, £6 billion will be invested in inclusive economic growth and we are on target to attract £4 billion in match funding and to deliver over 113,000 jobs. All this has been made possible by making joined-up decisions at a local level thanks to our triple helix structure of bringing public, private, and educational leaders together.
